What Is a LOLER Inspection?

A LOLER inspection is a statutory thorough examination carried out to assess lifting equipment in line with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. In accordance with guidance issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), these inspections are required to meet LOLER obligations, including those set out under Regulations 9, 10, and 11.

These examinations apply to anyone who owns, operates, or controls lifting systems and are a legal requirement. Beyond compliance, it helps prevent accidents, injuries, and equipment failures by identifying potential risks early and supporting safe lifting operations. All inspections are carried out by a competent person with the appropriate knowledge, training, and experience.

How Often Are LOLER Inspections Required?

Every 6 months: Lifting accessories (such as slings, chains, and hooks) and equipment used to lift people.

Every 12 months: All other lifting equipment, unless a different interval is specified.

Written scheme of examination: Inspections may follow a written scheme of examination prepared by a competent person, where inspection intervals are set based on usage conditions and risk.

After exceptional circumstances: A thorough examination is also required every time an exceptional circumstance arises that could jeopardise safety, such as damage, modification, failure, or significant changes in operating conditions.
